Training of Trainers – Disaster First Aid
The Training of Trainers (TOT) on disaster fist aid has been recently concluded in Nanning, Guangxi, on 22 April 2013.
Supported by CUHK’s Knowledge Transfer Project Fund, thirty one participants coming from four organizations in Guangxi, including International Health Resources, Guangxi Blue Sky Rescue Team, Guangxi Outdoor Rescue Team, and Guangxi Mountain Rescue Team, took part in the one day intensive training.
The training introduced participants the basic principles of disaster, and various first aid theories and techniques applicable to earthquake situations. Group demonstrations on airway, wound and bleeding management, splinters, and triage were facilitated by Dr. Abubakar Adamuismaeel and Dr. Levina Chandra Khoe, two Master of Public Health students at the School of Public Health and Primary Care. The importance of household and community preparedness has also been highlighted to the participants.
Prof. Kevin, principal trainer of the ToT, said, ‘China is the most natural disaster prone country. We hope to strengthen civil society’s capacity to develop, manage and sustain their own disaster mitigation programmes. We also want to increase their knowledge and skills on medical humanitarian response, and encourage networking and sharing of information.”
CCOUC will continue to partner with local counterparts to conduct trainings on disaster preparedness and responses in China. The pilot training in Nanning will provide directions to further localize the content and delivery modality.
