Presenting at the “Human Security and Natural Disasters” workshop in Japan

The director of CCOUC, Professor Emily Chan and the centre’s visiting research fellow, Dr Rosamund Southgate, participated in a research workshop entitled ‘Human Security and Natural Disasters’ in February 2012. The workshop was organized by the United Nations University – Institute for Sustainability & Peace (UNU-ISP), Waseda University, RMIT Global Cities Research Institute, and the Japan Foundation. The workshop, held at the UNU-ISP in Tokyo, brought together international relations theorists, philosophers, government and UN organisation advisors, NGO workers as well as gender and health experts from across Asia, Australasia and North America. Together they discussed the theoretical as well as practical implications of applying a human security framework to natural disasters.

Professor Chan presented a paper entitled ‘Health relief in the context of demographic & epidemiological transitions: A rethink using the human security approach’, which discusses the growing but unmet chronic disease health needs post-disaster, with particular reference to the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, and how the application of a human security framework can suggest ways forward in meeting these needs. The workshop was followed by an open session for academics as well as the general public at which Professor Chan was a presenter and a member at the panel discussion. The papers and discussions from the workshop will be published into a book by the UNU Press.
